Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
