No fewer than thirteen passengers killed and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
